Off The Cuff
Take what works, discard what doesn’t.
We're all unique even though our basic needs are the same.
We're all unique even though our basic needs are the same.
It’s about way more than lies being bad
Yet, we are wise to remember that lies of all sizes and orientations break healthy connections between people. Pinocchio stories show how important it is to be real As well as the perseverance it takes to be real in a world where fake is the dangerous norm. Pinocchio stories also show how dangerous escapism is to being real When we expend our energy on escapism, the world crumbles around us - and nothing could be more sad, because the world needs us. An open heart is also open to pain.
Keep heart open, anyway. This kind of pain is the greatest grief in the world … … the grief born of true love. Truly intelligent people, everywhere, have one thing in common: They responsibly care more than almost everyone. It is painful to care that much, and yet intelligent people know that this is a price worth paying. IQ has little to do with True Intelligence. And, caring is primarily shown through actions, not spoken.
Intelligent people care about what’s right for all, short-term and long-term. When something bothers an intelligent person, they determine its worth by determining if others of decency would also be bothered. This helps them determine their corrective actions. Perhaps most important of all: Truly intelligent people never stop caring about what's important, no matter what. They do what they have to in order to never become jaded. How to Restore Health and Vitality Anywhere by Understanding the Reach and Variety of Pollutions9/7/2020 “Try and leave this world a little better than you found it, and when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate, you have not wasted your time but have done your best.” - Robert Baden-Powell I adopted this as a core value when a wee child and never let it go. It had the resonance of Truth.
Years of hands-on research in connectivity in multiple and highly varied environs, taught me that what resonates as True, matters. Yet, I wanted to know why certain values resonate as Truth. The answer is as simple as the value the quote is based on. There was nothing new about what I discovered. John Stuart Mill said in 1867, “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.”
Empathy is the effort put in to create understanding. We all need to be more understanding. Understanding beyond the first benefit of the doubt, though, is foolish and detrimental to society. When we use empathy to excuse uncivil attitudes in our communications, we are enabling incivility. To enable is to encourage the continuation of polluted discourse. Polluted discourse is the equivalent of subtle violence. We must start saying no even to the subtle forms of violence. Assert. Delete. Block. Report. Whatever suits the situation. Be one who helps us all return to helpful civic engagement.

The balm of existence. The mark of a true and humble superior. The protectors of curiosity and exploration. The creators of emotionally soothing ripples. This is part two of a two-part series. If you missed part one: What is a relationship? Why does how we relate matter?
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a convenient place to start. We can get those needs satisfied, ourselves. At each level, I give examples of ordinary effort that will help make any relationship work. These efforts help create an atmosphere that nourishes good will. There’s nothing complex here. Easy peasy here we come … Whenever I speak of relationships, I’m as misunderstood as when I say I’m a massage therapist. Assumptions kick in and there’s no budging. Folks, assumptions are killers of quality of life, mind, and heart - and relationships. Remember when we were once taught that to assume makes an “ass” out of “u” and “me”?
I used to get sick, often, growing up in my family home. I spent most of my sick days home alone. There were none of the fun shenanigans like in the film, Home Alone! Daytime TV and the couch were it. My options were game shows and soap operas. Except for The Price is Right, I opted for soap operas. I wasn't the typical child any more than I am the typical adult.
I lived my romantic dreams through Luke and Laura - the famous couple from General Hospital. Unlike most soap characters, Luke and Laura were better at the relationship thing. Almost everyone else managed to mess with Luke or Laura. You know how sports fans shout at the TV during competitions? Well, I shouted at the TV during my soaps. |
