The Science of Massage

Manual therapies benefit health and wellness through a known scientific and medicinal process called mechanotransduction, which simply means that a physical stimulus triggers a regulatory biochemical change that may improve wellness, and often dramatically so. Pressure, stretch, shear, and micro-vibrations are all examples of physical stimuli that, in the correct nuanced manner and range, generate positive and health-promoting changes within. Scientific knowledge about how these changes improve the lives of individuals is growing, but is still in the infancy stages as regards to clinical practice and the mainstream. Yet, fascia science, in particular, is quickly catching up and maturing regarding the wonderful and safer benefits of manual therapies.

Remarkable Fascia!

Fall In Love with Fascia

As outlandish as it sounds, whether we feel wonderful or woeful, the fasciae are affected thereby affecting our brains.
How? The nerves, that come from the stress part of the nervous system in our brain, end in the fascia.
This connection creates an infinite feedback loop from the external to the internal and back again.
When emotions are consistently triggered,
it directly impacts the nerve endings in the fascia which then report the situation to the brain whereby the brain sends either calm or red-alert signals that then affect regulatory chemicals.
Chronic negative conditions can cause chronic pain and disease syndromes.
Chronic positive conditions can cause chronic feel-good feelings and self-healing.
I don't mean to oversimplify, but it is about this simple.

This is why mindfulness techniques combined with bodywork therapies work so well: They calm our stressed out nervous system from both ends - while improving the health of the fasciae. This is also why we feel so physically wonderful when we fall in love! Good, old-fashioned love - love of life, love of animals, love of learning, love of wisdom, etc. - changes biochemistry to promote relaxation and self-healing.

As fascia clinicians know, and neuroscience, fascia research, and other medical and science disciplines are learning, w
hen we love and respect our fasciae and each other, we reduce stress and pain, and improve health for ourselves and others.

Fascia as Source of Consciousness?

Food for thought: Dr. Bruce Lipton, cellular biologist, said, "Consciousness is in the membrane of the cell." If this is true, then our global fascial system is our organ of consciousness, because the membranes of our cells and all other tissues are made of fascia.
Dr. Lipton also said, "Cell receptors are antennae - they receive signals from the environment."
If Dr. Lipton is right and science determines (as I hope it someday will) that our fascial fluids are conductive plasma, then we have some interesting answers where gut intuition and similar intuitive insights and visions are concerned. We also would have some answers regarding chronic health problems, but I'll save that explanation for another time.

Setting The Record Straight

Muscles took the stage, credit, and blame for too long. It is time to set the record straight: Fascia-focused bodywork combined with nerve-soothing vibrational therapy is the best method for facilitating a healthier you. This is what Paula's Body Shop focuses on, and this is why her clients get the fastest, longest-lasting, and often permanent results.
