When a client presents with extreme tension in a local area, there is no point in attempting manual therapy until it is calm and ready, first. There's one herb-infused oil recipe that works best in my experience. I let it soak in while I work elsewhere, and twenty minutes later (or less) the problem area is ready for manual therapy.

The General Recipe

Three herbs - St. John's Wort, Arnica, and Calendula, infused in olive oil.
This is a medicinal oil for medicinal purposes and is not for daily or cosmetic use.

I was introduced to this "trauma" oil while still in school. Although I have experimented with many oils since then, including a few concoctions of my own, nothing has served me better than this recipe when conditions warrant.

I have found this "trauma" oil to be useful in relaxing tense, tight muscles, reducing pain and inflammation, and speeding bruise recovery. For very physically active or injury-prone people, it's a must for your first aid kit.

There are two companies I know of that provide this oil. Click on image for link to their respective sites.
I am not an affiliate nor do I receive anything in return for recommending these products. I simply like to share with others that which has worked for me and for my clients.

Tension Headache
I once had a tension headache with a stiff neck for four days before I remembered I could do something about it. (What can I say?) I applied this oil to the side of my neck, right into the joints, not the muscles, and 20 minutes later my headache was gone and my neck was relaxed. This remarkable fix helped me to never forget, again!

Mountain Rose Herbs

This organic, affordable recipe also contains essential oil of lavender, which has estrogen-like properties. Lavender-containing products should not be used frequently or in developing males, in particular.

Herb Pharm

This is the original recipe I was introduced to. Over time, the description changes and often they are out of stock. Stores rarely carry this product even when they carry a lot of Herb Pharm, so be prepared to order online.
