Off The Cuff
Take what works, discard what doesn’t.
We're all unique even though our basic needs are the same.
We're all unique even though our basic needs are the same.
Every morning upon awakening I unclasp room-darkening curtains. As I pull the sturdy brown fabric wide I breathe in patience. I scan the nabe pretending it's all about the trees and the sky. It's difficult to hold back the heartache that the new day's trash brings. Not the bagged variety from sanitation's twice weekly pickup, but the surplus.
The night scavengers that rip open the bags. The workers that see the rips yet don't compensate. The dealers that throw their hate on the ground. The heartache happens anywhere any person thinks it's okay to drop their wares on any floor. No heart is happy living with litter. Litter is ugly, indoors or out. The feeling is lowest of the low. So simple to prevent such unhappiness. So I do. I grab my grabber and my little blue bucket. I pretend I'm getting much needed air and exercise. I'm still recovering from COVID's pneumonia and countless side effects. I sing to myself to stave off the hurt and blame. I enjoy the process of beautification. I'm sometimes challenged, "Why do you do that?" I'm sometimes thanked, feeling a similar challenge. I sometimes say hi to one of the dealers that is part of the mess. I hope my hi says, "Tell your psychopath dealer friend who threatens me, that there's nothing here to hate." Every morning before I rise, my heart wonders if today's morning view will be a good one.
