Off The Cuff
Take what works, discard what doesn’t.
We're all unique even though our basic needs are the same.
We're all unique even though our basic needs are the same.
Shahar et el., Scientific Reports Time wrote a refreshingly responsible article titled, "No, Teenagers Are Not Growing 'Skull Horns' Because of Smart Phones." Cell phone use has become so central to people's lives, it should be no surprise that people's necks have developed poor posture that is exacerbated by what's known as over-use syndrome. Both can result in the development of what is commonly called bone spurs. Bone spurs don't generally cause a problem unless they have sharp edges.
My practice now involves about 90% seeking out sharp osteophytes and enthesophytes (types of bone spurs) and "smoothing" them out to avoid the domino effect that any inadvertent sharp edges may cause to surrounding soft fascia or tissues, like nerves, lymph, tendons, or ligaments. The bones are living, receptive, reactive fascia, and when they exude outward, they are doing so to bring needed support to a given area. Being mineralized hard fascia, sometimes they leave sharp edges upon formation. Sometimes, though, they are reacting, like an allergy or acne, to stress and diet. It all depends on the location and the individual. The good news is, something can be done about it, and this is why I'm so excited about the direction my practice has taken, because it turns out that most of our aches and pains, tightness and restrictions, are coming from our bones. Our bones are talking, but are we listening? This clinician is working hard to learn the language of the hard fascia that we call bones. Comments are closed.
